REALTOR® Code of Ethics

What is the REALTOR® Code of Ethics?

The Code of Ethics of the National Association of REALTORS, which is internationally recognized by lawyers and laymen, is a document of articles that measures the professionalism in the real estate industry. Although is does not describe the lowest common denominator of permissible behavior like the licensing laws of the state, it does outline the highest ideals of professional performance the public and other REALTORS® should expect from REALTORS®.

This means that REALTORS® are held to a higher standard of conduct in the industry than other real estate licensees who are not members of the association. Simply, REALTORS® are bound by the Code while other real estate agents are not. While the Louisiana Real Estate Commission issues licenses to practice in Louisiana and enforces the statutes of the law, the National Association of REALTORS controls the Code of Ethics. In northeast Louisiana, the Northeast Louisiana Association of REALTORS® enforces it.
